Workplace Mental Health: Moving from Awareness to ACTION

Implications of Covid-19 for Mental Health

Prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, mental illness was already a very serious – and growing – problem. Whether you looked at the data published by the World Health Organization, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) or the Canadian Mental Health Association, the picture was clear: we needed to learn how to take better care of our mental health while learning how to improve our response to mental illness, especially in workplaces.

And then came Covid. Our lives have been completely upended, with massive amounts of strain and anxiety suddenly added.

The new statistics are alarming. According to an article on the implications of Covid-19 for mental health by KFF, the average share of adults reporting symptoms of depression and/or anxiety disorder jumped from 11% in January-June 2019 to 41% in January 2021.

Every employer – indeed, every person – should pay close attention to this data. It is simply not sustainable for us to continue on as we did prior to the pandemic, when the vast majority of employers focused on mental health awareness campaigns.

It is time to move from awareness to ACTION on workplace mental health.

In recognition of Mental Health Month in the US, as well as Mental Health Week in Canada, we at StigmaZero would like to applaud all of the employers who have already taken the leap from awareness to action regarding mental health, mental illness and stigma.

When it comes to workplace mental health, the awareness that has been generated in recent years is an important first step – but in truth, it isn’t enough to create the culture transformation needed.

So what, exactly, is needed?

ACTION.

ACTION in the form of real investment by employers into the mental health of their employees.

ACTION in the form of ending the stigma of mental illness.

ACTION in the form of specialized training that offers the knowledge, strategies and tools your employees and managers are asking for.
